I'm just a girl who likes to DIY anything and everything. More than that, I love teaching people - especially women - how to pick up power tools and create the home of their dreams. Stop waiting for someone else and starting Doing It Yourself. I'll show you how!
I spent months blaming Utah. The dry air, the altitude, maybe the stress of moving that just wouldn’t end. My skin was constantly itchy. My hair felt like straw no matter what products I used. I went through bottles of lotion, switched shampoos, and convinced myself this was just life now.
It wasn’t Utah. It wasn’t my body. It was my water.
Hard Water Was the Problem I Suspected
We bought our 1990s home knowing it needed work. I’m used to renovations. I can demo a wall, refinish cabinets, tile a backsplash. But water? That’s not something I wanted to guess on or YouTube my way through.
Hard water happens when your water has high levels of calcium and magnesium. These minerals build up everywhere water goes: on faucets, in appliances, on your skin, in your hair. You can see it as white crusty spots on your showerhead or cloudy film on your glasses. What you can’t always see is what it’s doing to your skin, your hair, and your home’s water-using appliances.
In Utah, hard water is extremely common. We used to live here so I knew that. What I didn’t realize was how much it was affecting our daily life until Culligan came out and actually tested it. My jaw dropped when I saw the results.
In our previous homes, we also had hard water! It feels like it’s everywhere! So I knew I wanted to work with Culligan again. We had Culligan in our home before and they were a name we trusted with our water – and honestly, a name I can stand behind recommending to you.
The Water Test That Changed Everything
Culligan offers a free in-home water test, and I’m so glad we did it. Their water treatment specialist came out and tested our water for hardness, pH, chlorine, and total dissolved solids. The results explained everything. Our water was working against us in ways I didn’t even realize.
The test took maybe 20 minutes. They walked me through what each number meant, showed me exactly what was in our water, and explained how a water softener would solve it. No sales pitch. Just facts and a clear recommendation. I just felt educated on my water.I’ve had Culligan systems in two previous homes, so I already trusted them. But seeing the test results in this house made it clear we needed to get one installed here too.
What Changed After We Installed the Culligan Water Softener
Culligan installed a whole home water softener, and the difference was immediate.
My skin stopped feeling tight and itchy. I wasn’t layering on lotion three times a day anymore. Soft water doesn’t dry out your skin the way hard water does.
My hair felt healthier. It was softer, shinier, and I wasn’t fighting frizz constantly. Hard water leaves mineral buildup on your hair. Soft water actually lets your shampoo and conditioner do their job.
We started using way less soap, shampoo, dish and laundry detergent than we used to. Soft water lathers better, so you don’t need as much product. That adds up.
Our appliances are protected. Hard water causes scale buildup inside dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters. That buildup makes them work harder and wear out faster. A water softener prevents that, which means our appliances should last longer and run more efficiently. That’s money saved on repairs and replacements down the line. Water softeners have benefits that most people don’t even think about until they have one.
Everything feels cleaner. Dishes don’t have spots. The shower doesn’t get that filmy buildup. Surfaces are easier to clean because soap actually rinses off instead of leaving residue. It’s one of those things you don’t notice until it’s not a problem anymore.
Why I Didn’t DIY This
I’m very capable. I’ve renovated multiple homes. I can figure most things out. But water treatment isn’t something I wanted to experiment with.
Water quality affects everything in your home. Your skin, your hair, your appliances, your plumbing. If you get it wrong, you’re either wasting money on a system that doesn’t work or you’re making the problem worse.
Culligan has been doing this for over 90 years. Their experts know what they’re looking at when they test your water. They recommend systems based on your specific water issues, not a one-size-fits-all solution. And they handle the installation, the maintenance, everything.
I wanted it done right the first time. That’s worth paying for.
One of the best parts of this whole process was how easy Culligan made it. From the initial water test to the installation, their team was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful. They answered every question I had without making me feel like I was asking too much. They showed up on time, explained what they were doing, and left everything clean when they were done.
I’ve dealt with a lot of contractors and service providers during renovations, and the experience isn’t always smooth. Culligan’s team was the opposite. They knew what they were doing, they did it efficiently, and they made sure I understood how to maintain the system going forward. It felt like working with experts who actually cared about solving the problem, not just making a sale.
This level of service matters when you’re trusting someone with something as important as your home’s water quality. Again, having had Culligan systems in previous homes, I can tell you the service is not only great, but it is consistently great.
This Was One of the Best Home Upgrades We’ve Made
People ask me all the time what home upgrades are actually worth it. Most people think about kitchens, bathrooms, flooring. Those are visible upgrades that make a house look better.
But a water softener? That’s an upgrade you feel every single day. Every time you wash your hands, take a shower, do laundry, run the dishwasher. It improves your quality of life in ways you don’t realize until you have it. Trust me – once you have a Culligan water softener – there’s no going back.
It also can add value to your home. Buyers care about water quality. A whole home water softener is a selling point, especially in areas with hard water like Utah.
If you’re dealing with dry skin, dull hair, water spots on everything, or you just suspect your water isn’t great, have Culligan come test it. The test is free. You’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with and whether a water softener makes sense for your home.
I’m glad we didn’t wait any longer. Our 1990s home needed a lot of work, but getting the water right was one of the smartest things we did.
