I'm just a girl who likes to DIY anything and everything. More than that, I love teaching people - especially women - how to pick up power tools and create the home of their dreams. Stop waiting for someone else and starting Doing It Yourself. I'll show you how!
I’m partnering with Culligan for this post, and all opinions are my own.
If you’re dealing with hard water, you’ve probably wondered how to prepare for a water softener installation, or if you need a plumber to install a water softener at home. I know I did before we got our first Culligan system.
They’ve taken care of my water in every one of our homes. Having been through the process with Culligan multiple times, in different homes, over the years, I can tell you this: it’s way easier than you think. And if you’re working with Culligan, you really don’t need to do much at all.
Let me tell you step-by-step what really happened when we installed our Culligan water softener in our current home, and what you can expect if you’re thinking about getting one. Spoiler alert: it’s pretty simple.
The first step is figuring out what’s actually in your water. You can’t fix a problem you don’t understand.
Thankfully, Culligan offers a free in-home water test, and that’s where we started. Their local specialist came to our house and tested our water for hardness, pH, chlorine, and total dissolved solids. The whole thing took about 20 minutes.
They walked me through the results in plain language. No jargon and no pressure. Just: here’s what’s in your water, here’s what it means, and here’s what we recommend based on your specific situation.
Our water had high levels of calcium and magnesium, which causes hard water. That explained the dry skin, dull hair, and buildup on faucets and fixtures. Based on those results, they recommended a whole-home water softener.
The test is completely free, and there’s no obligation to buy anything. It’s just discovery. You learn about your water, and you find out what a solution would look like for your home. If you’re not sure what your home needs, start there.
I’ve had a water softener in two previous homes, so I knew what I was looking for when we moved into our 1990s house.
Here’s why I always choose Culligan:
Expertise. Culligan has been helping families upgrade their water for over 90 years. Their local specialists know the water in your area. I’ve lived in a few different states, and Utah has some of the hardest water in the country. It’s definitely not something you want to DIY. Thankfully, Culligan has seen it all and it doesn’t scare them. When it comes to water softeners, they’re not guessing. They know what works and will give me a reliable system that will last.
Professional installation and maintenance. One of the best parts is how hands-off it is for me. I’ve got enough going on and I love that Culligan handles everything from start to finish. You’re not coordinating with a separate plumber or trying to install it yourself. They install it, test it, show you how it works, and stay available for maintenance and service whenever you need it.
Systems built to last. Culligan water softeners are designed for long-term performance. They’re not temporary fixes. These are systems that protect your home, your appliances, and your plumbing for years.
Peace of mind. Water quality affects everything in your home. I didn’t want to DIY this or take a chance on a system that might work “for now” but fail later. I wanted it done right the first time by people who know water inside and out.
That’s why I’ve chosen Culligan every time. Water is too important to guess on.
Honestly, you don’t need to do much.
When Culligan scheduled our water softener installation, they told me what to expect and confirmed the installation location. I didn’t need to coordinate with a separate plumber: All I had to do was clear the space for the technician.
The day of the install, I greeted the team at the door, showed them where the water line and existing setup were, and then I went about my day. They handled everything.
A lot of people assume you need to hire a plumber separately to install a water softener. That’s not the case with Culligan.
Culligan’s team handles the entire installation. They’re trained specialists who know exactly how to install water softening systems in any home setup. You don’t need to coordinate with anyone else or worry about whether your plumber knows how to do it correctly.
If you were trying to install a water softener yourself or through a general handyman, you might need a plumber’s help. But with Culligan, professional installation is part of the service.
Culligan’s installation includes everything:
They also clean up after themselves. No mess left behind. No half-finished work. Just a fully functioning water softener and a team that makes sure you understand how to use it.
Our Culligan water softener was installed in a closet in our basement where the main water line comes in. The unit itself isn’t huge – about 5 feet tall and a foot wide. It fit perfectly in my utility room with space to spare. Exact dimensions below! I have it on one side of my sink so there’s still room for soap, sponges, and everything else on the other side.
Every install is different. The size and placement depend on your home’s layout, your water usage, and where your main water line is located. During the free water test, the Culligan specialist will assess your space and recommend the right system and location for your setup.
If you’re concerned about space, ask during the water test. They’ll tell you exactly what will work in your home.

Our installation took about 2 hours, maybe a little longer. I wasn’t watching the clock because I was upstairs working while they handled everything in the basement. It was really nice to keep going on with my day while they did their installation.
The team showed up on time, got to work, and let me know when they were finished. They tested the system, walked me through how it works, and made sure I knew how to add salt when needed.
That said, every install is different. The timeline depends on your home’s plumbing setup, where the system is being installed, and whether any adjustments need to be made. But in general, Culligan handles everything: You just sit back, relax, and get excited about the difference that better, soft Culligan water can make throughout your whole home.
This is one of the best parts: Culligan water softeners are extremely low maintenance.
The main thing you need to do is keep the salt tank filled. That’s it. The system does the rest.
I use the Culligan Connect app, which sends me alerts when the salt is running low. It also tracks the system’s performance and can alert me if there’s ever an issue. Honestly, I don’t have to think about it at all.
As if it weren’t easy enough, you can also set up salt delivery. No more driving to the store and hauling heavy bags home. The salt comes directly to your house.
If something does go wrong or I have questions, Culligan is there. They can handle all maintenance needs, so I’m not troubleshooting on my own or trying to figure out who to call.
It’s a true “set it and forget it” system, which is exactly what I wanted.
Absolutely, I’ve had Culligan in three homes over the course of many years. For my family and me, it’s a long-term investment that improves both our home and our daily life.
The immediate benefits are obvious. Softer skin and hair. Cleaner dishes. Less soap and detergent are needed. Water that doesn’t leave buildup on faucets and fixtures.
But the long-term value is just as important. A water softener protects your appliances from scale buildup, which means they last longer and run more efficiently. That’s money saved on repairs, replacements, and energy bills over time.
Water quality also matters if you ever sell your home. Buyers care about it, especially in areas with hard water like Utah. A whole-home water softener is a selling point, not just a nice-to-have.
Whether you’re in your forever home or not, a Culligan system makes everyday life better. You feel the difference every time you wash your hands, take a shower, do laundry, or run the dishwasher.
For me, working with Culligan has always been worth it. I’ve had their systems in multiple homes, and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with something as important as my water quality.
If you’re dealing with hard water signs like dry skin, dull hair, water spots, or buildup on fixtures, call Culligan for a free in-home water test.
There’s no pressure to buy anything. You’ll learn exactly what’s in your water, what’s causing the problems you’re seeing, and what a solution would look like for your home.
The test is free, and it’s the best way to find out if a water softener is right for you.
I’m glad we didn’t wait. Getting our water right was one of the smartest decisions we made for this house.
